Emotional Dysregulation
Emotional dysregulation refers to the difficulty in managing emotional responses, often resulting in intense, prolonged, or inappropriate emotional reactions. In children with ADHD, this can manifest as irritability, impulsive emotional outbursts, or heightened sensitivity to perceived rejection. These emotional challenges can be linked to both the brain’s regulatory systems and learned behaviors from dealing with ADHD. While not a universal feature of ADHD, emotional dysregulation is common and can impact relationships, mood stability, and daily functioning. Effective management may include behavioral therapies and, in some cases, medication.
